Reprinted with permission. from Writers Almanac, March 7, 2011

Antilamentation

Regret nothing. Not the cruel novels you read
to the end just to find out who killed the cook.
Not the insipid movies that made you cry in the dark,
in spite of your intelligence, your sophistication.
Not the lover you left quivering in a hotel parking lot,
the one you beat to the punchline, the door, or the one
who left you in your red dress and shoes, the ones
that crimped your toes, don't regret those.
Not the nights you called god names and cursed
your mother, sunk like a dog in the livingroom couch,
chewing your nails and crushed by loneliness.
You were meant to inhale those smoky nights
over a bottle of flat beer, to sweep stuck onion rings
across the dirty restaurant floor, to wear the frayed
coat with its loose buttons, its pockets full of struck matches.
You've walked those streets a thousand times and still
you end up here. Regret none of it, not one
of the wasted days you wanted to know nothing,
when the lights from the carnival rides
were the only stars you believed in, loving them
for their uselessness, not wanting to be saved.
You've traveled this far on the back of every mistake,
ridden in dark-eyed and morose but calm as a house
after the TV set has been pitched out the upstairs
window. Harmless as a broken ax. Emptied
of expectation. Relax. Don't bother remembering
any of it. Let's stop here, under the lit sign
on the corner, and watch all the people walk by.

Introducing Ilya Malachi Schatzi

so, here is my new friend. My new Siberian Husky puppy. Everything I do now revolves around where she needs to be, what she needs, what's she's chewing, where she is - but it's been so much fun. She is happy to see me after I've been away for, oh say 15 seconds in the other room. Can't leave my side that one. I hope to post more and have many adorable photos to share. Tigger would approve.

Bulldozers On Ice

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_fhObAv7uewk/TUvR__joBbI/AAAAAAAAAHA/O4sWrW4-pOQ/s320/trucks.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5569776261496571314" />
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 219px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_fhObAv7uewk/TUvR_u-vLcI/AAAAAAAAAG4/LkHRYKvC-d8/s320/littleguy_01.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5569776257046883778" />

How does one get paid for blogging? I'd sure like to figure that one out.

It's 4:35am, East Coast time and I am wide awake. Why you ask? Well, while living on Main Street is oh so charming, what with all its cute pawn shop store fronts, empty buildings and Frank Sinatra playing over the speaker system, it is also a testing ground for those of us who prefer to sleep when it is dark out. In the summer months, I either wake up to find men, looking like Robert DeNiro, putting up community banners across Main Street or I wake up to the sounds of the street washer trucks. I am sure there is a more appropriate name for them, I just don't know what it is.

But in the winter, oh in the winter, (sense the excitement) I get to wake up to bangs and thugs of heavy equipment scraping and lifting and hauling snow from the sidewalks and streets below my third floor window. With reverse alarms beeping and blades screeching and that scraping, god the scraping, like 10 nails down a chalk board.

I do appreciate the effort these men (or women) put forth, for pete's sake it is only, what 9degrees out this morning. They deserve a free breakfast from John Williams Euro Deli just around the corner. Hmm.. I'm up, maybe I should go get me some grub.

And to watch them all from above, it looks like some finely tuned choreographed musical of heavy equipment - bulldozers and snowplows and dump trucks - moving in and out and backwards and forwards all with the same momentum and goal. Bulldozers on Ice I shall call this show. A 4yr old little boys (and the local rednecks) dream. The snow could be anything - sand, dirt, mud, snow - all those trucks look like one hell of a good time when they are all playing nicely together. One big happy sandbox, or in this case, snow box.

Kinda makes me want to call the DOT and ask how long it takes to get me one of them licenses so maybe next winter I will be the one out there hauling away the heavy, white stuff, waking up unexpecting tenants who think living on Main Street is such a good idea.

Sparky on Christmas

<embed src="http://www.youtube.com/get_player" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"width="320" height="266" bgcolor="#FFFFFF"flashvars="flvurl=http://v9.nonxt4.googlevideo.com/videoplayback?id%3D665b90781d9a6d14%26itag%3D5%26app%3Dblogger%26ip%3D0.0.0.0%26ipbits%3D0%26expire%3D1329983746%26sparams%3Did,itag,ip,ipbits,expire%26signature%3D665ACC61CA2577A1BEFAAE6A5DAD7B0049D82051.75C554844DE91526798A0D4EBBA9147C78085341%26key%3Dck1&iurl=http://video.google.com/ThumbnailServer2?app%3Dblogger%26contentid%3D665b90781d9a6d14%26offsetms%3D5000%26itag%3Dw160%26sigh%3DFPQtCYSkXUckDUzAhGizKmqsh1E&autoplay=0&ps=blogger"allowFullScreen="true" />

Greetings from Wellsville, New York. Listen and watch this video I took Wednesday, Dec 8 out my front apartment window. That music you hear is actually coming from the speaker on the street corner. I zoomed in a bit so you could see it. This is the perfect place to spend the holidays. Regardless of the fact that that we have received 5' (yes, 5 feet) of snow in the last week, people still drive, because they know how to drive in the snow. Seattle residents, DOT - take note. :)

<embed src="http://www.youtube.com/get_player" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"width="320" height="266" bgcolor="#FFFFFF"flashvars="flvurl=http://v2.nonxt2.googlevideo.com/videoplayback?id%3D018f21575ed19f43%26itag%3D5%26app%3Dblogger%26ip%3D0.0.0.0%26ipbits%3D0%26expire%3D1329983746%26sparams%3Did,itag,ip,ipbits,expire%26signature%3D282C3997A332D711B28480AEC11DDB94819FEBA4.3CCF1959C36933FFB42380AACE1D6C2AA35AE5EF%26key%3Dck1&iurl=http://video.google.com/ThumbnailServer2?app%3Dblogger%26contentid%3D18f21575ed19f43%26offsetms%3D5000%26itag%3Dw160%26sigh%3D1K4-DlJq7kPn6CkxknEs1ho6Hog&autoplay=0&ps=blogger"allowFullScreen="true" />

It's still snowing.

Love to all. But I think I moved to the sweetest little town ever. Main street is all aglow in the evenings with white lights on trees and wreaths hung on every lamp post - your typical small town holiday. But did you know we also have a speaker system throughout the main street? I didn't know that! That is - at this moment - playing instrumental holiday music soft and low. Loud enough for those living on Main street to be constantly serenaded but soft enough not to annoy. Walking down main street last night while the first snow was falling, there it was... from out of nowhere, this sweet holiday melody comes down with the snowflakes from the night sky.

It's a wonderful life. Enjoy yours.

This is what I do now

So it's not every small town that can say on Wednesday had the biggest drug bust this side of Philidelphia has ever seen and then on Friday has a Santa Parade. As I type this, police cars and fire trucks are sauntering down main street. Main Street, USA, where dozens and dozens of kids, parents, senior citizens all gather on the sidewalk to watch and wait for the Annual Santa Parade. Thus wait for Santa to make his appearance. Probably some old Vet or town leader who "does it for the kids". Mom's yelling to their kids, "now straighten up and fly right, or we're going home" as they grab them by the arm and drag the youngster out of the street. Teenagers walk by, making fun of one another while smoking cigarettes. Nevermind that its about 35 degrees outside. No one notices the cold here.

This is what I do, while waiting for my clients to show up for their weekly Massage Session. I live on the third floor and because I am on Main Street I hear people all the time. Making peace with having to wake up, I've been listening to two men outside having a conversation. I couldn't tell what they were doing, but I assumed its some sort of landscaping - there is always someone ouside in the early morning, doing something like that. It's lovely really.

Here is the conversation I heard this morning: One guy, the gentle talker, tells the other guy, the brisk talker, about the crab boil on Thursday. They yell, because apparently they are far from each other to just talk. I think for sure, they are a block apart. "Every 3rd Thursday in August," Mr. Gentle says. "Sounds good," Mr Brisk remarks. "Yeah, good way to start a vacation - goin to Ohio on Friday. It's gonna be great. Hey do you know David Clark?", asks Mr Gentle. "Uh, well, I know the name." "You know he used to work for Company A, now he works for Company B," clarifies Mr Gentle. "Well, his wife was having a hard time breathing, ya know. A couple times. And they took her in, and they couldn't find nothin. Then just like that she's gone. There was a mass in her lungs that they never saw and it went right to her brain. Instant." There's a quiet pause. Mr Brisk speaks up, "God that's terrible." "The benefit for him and his girls is this weekend..."

The conversation continues and I lose the words as I decide to put my feet on the floor and open the new curtains, well fabric, I bought. Mom's helping me make curtains this week. The fabric is so dark that you cannot see through it, the street lights are bright at night. Girls gotta sleep. Anyway, I pull back the fabric, and WHOA! Hi boys. The men I spoke of are right outside my third floor window. They are hanging the United Way Fundraiser banner across Main Street. Apparently it attaches to my building and the one across the street.

Mr Brisk is up on the lift, with the banner, and Mr Gentle is on the ground waving along traffic. Mr Brisk looks like Robert DeNiro and Mr Gentle looks like a gray haired hippie (Can't get a close look). After all Mr Brisk is right outside my bedroom window. Robert DeNiro out my window? okay, I'll take it, I say outloud as I go make coffee.

Smokem' if ya gottem' - Bradford stories 02

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_fhObAv7uewk/TGqHnqaldhI/AAAAAAAAAGQ/CvjVyX6zSHo/s320/cigphoto.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5506362609884296722" />

They have Cigarette discount stores here. My news today is sad but inevitable. My long time companion and emotional healer has found her patch of eternal sunshine of her spotless mind. Tigger, who in human years was roughly 140 years old is now chasing mice and soaking up all the sunshine she can stand. On Monday, August 2, 2010 Tigger passed away quietly into the realms of ever after. In your lifetime I wish all of you the same love and joy she has brought me over the last 20 years.

She had a very eventful life. From being abandoned by her mother at 4 weeks, she came to me through a college friend. Scrawny and stinky Tigger melted my heart the moment she walked all over my artwork. She has been kidnapped, drugged and put on a plane to travel 3,000 miles. She has traveled by UHaul from Seattle to Santa Fe, New Mexico, Santa Fe to New York, New York to Seattle and finally Seattle to New York. Her time was spent playing soccer and hide-n-seek with me, racing down hallways after her time in the bathroom and snuggling under my arm to help me sleep. My life has been so enriched by her and I hope all who knew her will say your final farewell. Lord knows you do not want Tigger to come back and haunt you. Well, I wouldn't mind.

Thanks for all your love and support.

Landscaping: Part 2

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_fhObAv7uewk/S8XmR6pFErI/AAAAAAAAAFQ/qusoTZQJ8Lk/s320/trial_04sm.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5460023318730314418" />
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 207px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_fhObAv7uewk/S8XmRrvZVZI/AAAAAAAAAFI/nZc7hURQkZc/s320/trial_03sm.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5460023314730276242" />
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 190px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_fhObAv7uewk/S8XmRdagOkI/AAAAAAAAAFA/X4nhemLq3ag/s320/trial_02sm.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5460023310884551234" />
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 221px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_fhObAv7uewk/S8XjVQgC_wI/AAAAAAAAAE4/4YBLcdYXwPs/s320/trial_01sm.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5460020077602733826" />
I give you that story because I was so inspired by what we did at his house, that I took that energy and started a trail through my parents 7+ acres of "back yard". Most of which is covered with tiny tree saplings, fallen leaves and old tree trunks. I've convinced my nephews I am creating this trail so that we can run around and not get lost out in the woods. Here are quite a few before/during photos as I am on day 4 of this project. Some of the areas have no path whatsoever, so I am chopping down trees and clearing brush as I go, as some of the photos will show. There are too many to post today, but I will post more as I go.

Picture this: I have headphones on, coffee in my travel mug and a hatchet and rake. It's 9am, and my mother can hear me at the house (about 200feet away) singing Def Leppard's 'Photograph' at the top of my lungs. She said it was quite a serenade. I had no idea I was singing, ahem, yelling, so loud, but hey, out here no one really cares if a crazy lady from Seattle walks into your woods with a hatchet and sings Def Leppard at the top of her lungs.

I will update the photos as I update the trail. When you all come to visit we will have something to do. :)

My new career: Landscaping

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_fhObAv7uewk/S8XitlCh_cI/AAAAAAAAAEw/m22zNPzmYuA/s320/firepit_sm_03.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5460019395921313218" />
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 204px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_fhObAv7uewk/S8XitX9k7XI/AAAAAAAAAEo/XbWOq0rG4qo/s320/firepit_sm_02.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5460019392410873202" />
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 111px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_fhObAv7uewk/S8Xis3zSsJI/AAAAAAAAAEg/RJoQs5pIe7o/s320/firepit_sm_01.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5460019383777800338" />
So, on my first weekend back, I helped my friend Andrew clear up and re-design his campfire pit area, thing. I have no before photos but here is a snap of the after. We dug trenches, hauled dirt and huge rocks, cleared away bricks from in the ground, well, his son Colin, did that. But we formulated and thought out how we wanted it to look, using what he already had around him. Dirt, logs, and rocks. So we built a u-shape around the fire pit out of dirt, these large flat rocks from his yard and some tree trunks that were too big to burn. We fitted and shaped them in and around each other to form seating. The only thing he bought was sand to fill in the gaps, and I bought him an iced coffee cause he was working so hard.

Anyway, here is the finished project. I think it's pretty fantastic for a graphic designer and an engineer.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_fhObAv7uewk/S788EB4HMyI/AAAAAAAAAEY/ow2WmX8McFA/s320/ontopofthebarn01.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5458147313317262114" />
It's just geography. Where my nephews can climb to the top of their grandfathers barn, just because they can.

Seattle doesn't have anything I can't find here. Well, maybe except a good recycling program. Oh, and except for the lack of Indian restaurants and Octo-movie plexes and traffic. Downtown roads are in dire need of repaving, but no one seems to mind much. Listening to Red House Painters, Such Great Heights, at the only cafe/music venue/creative arts center in town. Coffee is just as expensive as it is in Seattle, $1.50 for a small cup of drip coffee. The cafe sits on the corner, diagnoal from the community bank and next to the famous Texas Hot eatery, only the home of the best chili dogs on the planet and yummy late night dessert pie. I think I can get a 50 cent cup of joe at the Modern Diner down the street. Bottomless, of course. Inside this place makes you feel like you are just about anywhere.

Step outside and you're reminded where you really are - there are 5 traffic lights in town, no real dividers in the street to tell right from left, but the people...the people are real and friendly and say hello when you walk by as if they know you, and they hold doors open for each other and they wave from across the street and they are quiet and content. Or at least it appears that way. You can have all the traffic and octo-plexes you want. Give me a sincere smile from a complete stranger and a wave from the UPS man as you drive by. That's not geography, that's where you are. Home.

I like it.

Finally Home

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_fhObAv7uewk/S7S1qMWDuRI/AAAAAAAAAEQ/1JPLUerRmOU/s320/redneck_couch.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5455184785125390610" />
If you are ever traveling East into Western New York with a 30ft UHAUL (like how the size of the rig gets bigger as I write?) be prepared to go 20mph over Interstate 86. What should have taken any normal vehicle 2 hrs home, took us almost 5. The truck feels every bump and when that happens the auto transport loosens the straps on my tires so then I have to stop every 10miles to tighten it up, so I don't loose the truck.

Making a long story short, we pulled into the Herberger homestead about 10pm on Tuesday night. Dad had a steak dinner with baked potato and salad waiting for us when we got home. And he bought flowers for my mom on her return. Very sweet.

This photo shows my new redneck lifestyle. Jealous aren't you? I was actually just waiting for dad to take the front door off so we could get the couch inside.

Truck is unloaded and returned and now is the challenge to find some sort of normalcy in my life. I will post on occassion, to keep you all updated...you all know I am not a phone person so I may not call as much as I should. Reception is spotty as well. All the hills and lack of "technology" prevents me from getting or sending calls sometimes. Nothing real exciting to report about today, it was exhausting and frustrating and we couldn’t be more pissed off at the Minnesota Department of Transportation if we tried. Road construction took us 45 minutes out of our way to get down I90 2 exits and when you travel at 45 mph it makes a difference. Once we were on I90 again, for the next 50 miles I had to drive either 30 miles in the slow lane because of bumps every 5 feet, or we could choose to drive 55mph in the fast lane. (Speedlimts in Minnesota are 75 max/40 min). So, we drove 55mph in the fast lane with flasher on the whole time. No one seemed to care much. Let me explain, with the 14ft truck and another 15ft trailer for the truck, according to UHAUL should be driven at a maximum speed of 55mph. So, after 50 miles of bad road, and I mean the worst roads on our trip, we decided to treat ourselves to a nice hotel stay at the Hampton Inn. The room was double what we’d been paying but mom said if we scrimp and eat the day old pizza and chicken wings for dinner we could stay. The beds were made for kings they were so plush and inviting. We set up camp and I tried to heat up the leftovers in the microwave. But this particular microwave had a “child” protective code on it. No buttons worked, we couldn’t get it to work. The little window that usually reads the time, literally said “CHILD” so we called the front desk to get the child safety code. Well she was dumbfounded; had never heard of this so she said she’d call us right back. Not before she offered to bring us a new one instead. We declined because of my cat. See, this whole time we’ve been illegally sneaking Tigger into every hotel we had stayed at and this one was adamant about their NO PET POLICY. We couldn’t have her ruin our streak and bust us with an animal, so we declined on her offer. Mom said just to be safe I should hide in the bathroom with Tigger for the meantime and so I did. There I was, sitting on the floor of the Hampton Inn bathroom, exhausted from a 10 hr drive on horrible roads, I was famished and couldn’t eat and all I really wanted was to sleep. Tigger quickly took care of that by proceeding to take a huge dump. And Tigger is a very odorous feline. If my friends could see me now, I thought as I leaned over and scooped up the offending specimen and tried to cover that smell with the only things I could find, aside from the vent. Mom’s RAVE hairspray. So, now I am sitting on the bathroom floor of this nice hotel, in the midst of cat shit and RAVE hairspray. The combination almost sent me over the edge. The front desk called back and said she hadn’t a clue what to do, so we said we’d use the lobby microwave. We feasted on day old chicken wings and veggie pizza and promptly fell into the land of nod. We decided since the beds were so damn comfy that we deserved to sleep in, at least until 7am.

Day 3

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_fhObAv7uewk/S660Dg1oG7I/AAAAAAAAAEI/t18edkrJRtY/s320/out+there_Murdon.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5453494171239717810" />
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_fhObAv7uewk/S660DKrHzcI/AAAAAAAAAEA/h6bb7tT0EB4/s320/PrairieTown_Murdon.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5453494165290077634" />
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 246px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_fhObAv7uewk/S660C10tk4I/AAAAAAAAAD4/PBp3hMv5nc0/s320/tiggerMar27.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5453494159693157250" />
Oh, the road, the big open road. Sometimes the novelty of driving wears off when you only have radio and one speaker that works. Crossed 2 time zones already and are down to 1300 miles left to go.

Tigger is fairing quite well, sans sedatives. She sleeps while we drive, eats when we get to the hotel and does her business while at the hotel. No crying, nothing.

Murdo, South Dakota. Exit 192, Interstate 90. Few hotels, truck stop, 4 churches and The Diner. The Diner was supposed to be our big night out to dinner. We were going to order steak! We figured being in Black Angus country - thats is what is on the left and right as we drive - so hey, its gonna be great. Right? Um, I have never tasted anything so disgusting in my life. And this statement covers by college years. The baked potato was good, the green beans were from my grade school and the steak looked pale and freezer burned and tasted like ground hamburger. Our lovely waitress was sweet and bored. Order the BLT if you go.

Mom just met 4 hunters in the hallway of our Hotel. They all have shotguns in their hands. Took us all day, at 45-55mph. Nothing real exciting today. We wanted to cut some time off our trip so we were debating whether or not to take a 2 lane highway out of Billings to South Dakota, Route 212. I called the Montana Highway Patrol to see what the conditions of the road were, etc. They said, Oh sure go ahead, but that they hadn't been down that road in awhile. So we stopped to get gas and asked a local of Billings to give us the scoop. The kid, Corey, was busy with his job, replacing light fixtures at a convenince store. We pulled up and asked if he had a moment. Walking over to the truck, he politely said, "What can I help you with?" We asked what the story was on Route 212, road condition, amenities, etc. He said, "oh yeah you can take it, but..."(and I quote), in his southern Montana accent - yes, there is a southern Montana accent, think southern with a twinge of cowboy, polite but husky and crass- "...it's Friday night. Kids go up and down that road racing, and sometimes killing the Indians as they walk along the highway, cause they aint got no cars...so you may want to avoid it." "What about hotels or food along the way?", we asked. "Oh no," Corey remarked, with what looked like meth and cigarette damaged teeth, "...that's a dead zone, so fill up on gas now and eat even if you aint hungry, cause it's a dead zone." Thanks dude.

We ended up staying on Route 90 south to Sheridan, Wyoming. Found a Motel 8, tried to bribe a local restaurant to deliver Baby back ribs and salads to us, but even with the $20 tip temptation, they were, "Unable to deliver due to the fact they had to to-go containers." We settled for Buffalo wings and veggie pizza from Pizza Hut. Although we did have to bribe them to bring us celery with our wings. As it happened, the "Celery truck just came in", Delroy said as he handed us our food. We gave him $10 bucks extra for his extraordinary efforts.

I found the Bramble Inn especially small town adorable. Alas, we did not stay there. I think someone must be dating someone whose name begins with "R". Check out the sign.

Up and ready to go, it's now Saturday morning and we're headed to the Badlands of South Dakota. Hopefully we'll get past Souix City and into Minnesota tonight.
Ciao.

Day 1

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_fhObAv7uewk/S6333tZmB8I/AAAAAAAAADg/n3yrIQaGFro/s320/DandDonna.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5453287260267349954" />
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_fhObAv7uewk/S6333bdfaZI/AAAAAAAAADY/nqZTMq5WP1o/s320/tigger_road1.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5453287255451855250" />
Day 1

Seattle-Almost Missoula, Montana
Mom and I started out of Seattle with typical West Seattle Bridge traffic at 7am today. I WILL NOT MISS SEATTLE TRAFFIC. Nope, not at all. It was a very difficult morning. I had to leave behind most of what I thought was who I was for the last 16 years. I made peace with that girl and I have let her go. What I haven’t been able to make peace with is leaving my dear girlfriends. We woke this morning to a rainy day, dressed and packed the rest of the truck with food rations for the trek and clean clothes for the next day. Over coffee and a bagel we tried to make small talk about small things. Because it was too hard to look into their eyes without bursting and having that choked up, hard to breathe right feeling.
We waved goodbye and started our drive.
Driving a 20ft truck and tow is very different from driving my Toyota Tacoma alone. I am a bit of a speed-demon, so maintaining a 50-55mph speed limit takes some getting used to. I’ll make this quick, cause I’m tired. 11hours and we pulled into a Missoula, Montana Motel 6 about 7pm. Ate a turkey sandwich, brushed our teeth and went to bed.
Oh, did I mention Tigger was literally seconds away from pooping on my mom?

Hilarious.

Living Large on a 20ft Barge

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_fhObAv7uewk/S6rfGArsPtI/AAAAAAAAADQ/YuoEHMhdvpA/s320/IMGP4513.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5452415593240870610" />
Picked up the UHAUL and arrived back to my apartment this morning, and found my mom waiting outside for me. It wasn't because she couldn't wait to help me pack, it was because she had been locked out of my apartment when she went outside for a smoke. She waited patiently in my Seattle neighborhood for over an hour while I tried to maneuver a 14ft truck through the city streets. I hit someones side mirror somewhere in Ballard. Sorry Ballard dude. Apparently though my mom didn't have such a great time this morning. She went outside to grab a smoke, locked herself out and realized she had forgotten her smokes and her coffee, so she sat in my lawn chair in the street to save a space to park the uhaul. The cell phone was inside. She's a trooper, my mom. Liz, oh my god Liz, if anyone needs to pack a truck like a jigsaw puzzle, call Liz. She is the bomb! Here is a photo of the 20ft barge outside Liz and Dee's place in West Seattle. Wish us luck. More to come. Leaving bright and early Thursday morning.
